The Armor of God

The
Armor
of God

Ephesians 6:10-18

-NASB1995-

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

The Shield of Faith
(Part 4)

The shield of faith promises to protect us against the enemies fiery darts and to extinguish the fire completely.

The Helmet of
Salvation (Part 5)

We need to wear the helmet of salvation at all times, so that Satan does not place discouragement and thoughts of doubt, distrust, confusion, anger, despair and lies in our minds to take away the blessed hope we have in Jesus Christ.

The Armor of God

The "Armor of God" is a biblical metaphor found in the New Testament book of Ephesians 6:10-18. It refers to the spiritual armor that Christians are encouraged to put on in order to stand firm against the evil forces of this world and be able to resist temptations and influences from the devil. The armor is described as having six key pieces: belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, footwear of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

  1. Belt of Truth: The belt of truth is described as the first piece of armor to put on and is meant to symbolize the foundation of our faith and our commitment to telling the truth. In ancient times, soldiers would use a belt to secure their armor and weapons, and in the same way, we need to secure our spiritual armor with truth. This truth is rooted in God's word, and it is through studying and understanding the Bible that we can strengthen our commitment to living a life of truth.

  2. Breastplate of Righteousness: The breastplate of righteousness protects the heart and symbolizes the importance of living a righteous life. In ancient times, the breastplate was worn to protect the vital organs from physical attack, and in a spiritual sense, it protects our hearts from the attacks of evil. This righteousness is not based on our own good works, but rather it is the result of faith in Jesus Christ and the forgiveness of our sins that He offers.

  3. Footwear of the Gospel of Peace: The footwear of the gospel of peace symbolizes our readiness to spread the good news of the gospel and to share the peace that comes from knowing Jesus. Just as soldiers needed sturdy footwear to be able to move quickly and effectively, so too do we need to be equipped with the gospel of peace in order to be able to share the love of Christ with others.

  4. Shield of Faith: The shield of faith is a symbol of our ability to trust in God and to resist the attacks of the devil. In ancient times, the shield was used to protect soldiers from arrows and other weapons, and in a spiritual sense, it protects us from the fiery darts of the evil one. This faith is not just a passive belief, but an active trust in God and His promises, which allows us to stand firm in the face of temptation and persecution.

  5. Helmet of Salvation: The helmet of salvation is a symbol of our protection from the lies and false teachings of the devil. In ancient times, the helmet protected the head and the brain, and in a spiritual sense, it protects our minds from being led astray by false beliefs. This salvation is not just a one-time event, but an ongoing experience that renews our minds and helps us to grow in our relationship with God.

  6. Sword of the Spirit: The sword of the Spirit is the only offensive weapon in the armor of God and symbolizes the power of the word of God. In ancient times, the sword was used to defend oneself and to attack the enemy, and in a spiritual sense, the sword of the Spirit is the only weapon that we need to defeat the devil. This sword is the Bible, and it is through studying and meditating on God's word that we can be equipped to stand firm against the attacks of evil.

In conclusion, the armor of God is a powerful metaphor that reminds us of the spiritual weapons that are available to us as believers in Jesus Christ. By putting on each piece of the armor, we can be better equipped to resist temptation, defend against the attacks of the devil, and share the gospel of peace with others.
